Do banks fuel climate change

Do climate-oriented regulatory policies affect the flow of credit towards polluting firms? We match loan-level data to firm-level greenhouse gas emissions to assess the impact of the Paris Agreement. We find that, following this agreement, European banks reallocated credit away from polluting firms in relative terms. Specifically, euro area banks’ loan share to more polluting firms decreased by about 3percentage points compared to less polluting (or “green”) firms after the 2015 Paris Agreement (COP21). This result is stronger for banks that are well capitalized, have lower credit quality, and are less profitable.

Mutual funds and climate news

With rising public attention to climate change, the proliferation of green mutual funds reflects expectations that they will contribute to a sustainable economic transition. This paper investigates the effects of climate news on mutual fund flows and portfolio allocation decisions. Using detailed flow- and holding-level data, we observe that heightened climate news results in significantly larger capital inflows into green funds than into their non-green counterparts. Furthermore, we show that, in response to climate news, green funds decrease their exposure to high-polluting firms relative to low-polluting firms more than non-green funds do. These results suggest that increasing public attention boosts capital reallocation towards green funds and that, in turn, potentially fosters investment relocation towards more environmentally friendly companies.

Climate-change regulations: Bank lending and real effects

We analyze how capital requirements from environmental risk exposure affect bank lending to the corporate sector, and how these effects transmit to real economic activity and to greenhouse gas emissions. To do so, we exploit the introduction of a policy in Brazil that required banks to incorporate environmental risks in their capital assessments. Using comprehensive credit data, we find that the policy induces large banks to reallocate their lending away from exposed sectors. The credit contraction has no substantial impact on the real activity and greenhouse gas emissions of these sectors, as smaller banks expand their lending afterwards. However, the policy triggers a moderate labor reallocation from small firms (i.e., those with higher costs of switching lenders) and into large firms within environmentally exposed sectors.

Stock liquidity and corporate climate performance: evidence from China

In this study, we consider for the first time whether and how stock liquidity impacts corporate climate performance in China. We find that an increase in stock liquidity is highly associated with lower carbon emissions. To address endogeneity concerns, we exploit a unique quasi-natural experiment in China— the stock market liberalization (Shanghai-Shenzhen Hong Kong Stock Connect). Using difference-in-differences (DID) estimations, we find that carbon emissions for treatment firms substantially decrease after the stock market liberalization. The impact of stock liquidity is more pronounced for enterprises facing severe financial constraints, greater equity dependence, and operating in pollution-intensive sectors. Similarly, we find that external monitoring, carbon abatement investment, and green innovation are plausible channels through which stock liquidity drives carbon emissions reduction. We further find that the sensitivity of corporate climate performance to improved stock liquidity becomes stronger following the Paris Agreement. Overall, we uncover new evidence on the impact of stock liquidity on corporate climate performance, expanding our understanding of the role of financial markets towards a greener economy.

Climate change exposure, financial development, and the cost of debt: Evidence from EU countries

Utilising climate-related narratives in conference call transcripts to measure firm-level exposure to climate risks, we examine the association between such exposure and the corporate cost of debt financing. Using a sample of 21 European countries from 2001 to 2020, we find that firms exposed to greater climate change experience higher debt costs. The impact is even more extreme when using climate-related opportunity and regulatory exposure measures. We further find critical economic channels through which the higher debt costs occur: financial development and credit supplies. Specifically, our findings hold only for firms in weakly developed financial markets and institutions as measured by the new broad-based multi-dimensional financial development indices. We also find some other conditioning factors. Firstly, the higher the carbon intensity level, the greater the debt cost a firm with more climate change exposure must pay. Secondly, debtholders appear to punish firms with high environmental and social disclosure that are exposed to more climate change. Thirdly, the findings are more pronounced in financially constrained firms.

Commodity prices co-movements and financial stability: A multidimensional visibility nexus with climate conditions

This paper investigates the nexus between climate-related variables, commodity price co-movements and financial stability. First, we project the commodity price time series onto a multilayer network. Centrality measures computed on the network are used to detect the existence of common trends between the series and to characterize the role of different nodes during phases of market downturns and upturns, unveiling the onset of financial instability. Then, an econometric analysis is introduced to show how climate-related variables affect financial stability by influencing co-movements of commodity prices. Overall, the paper reveals how synthetic indicators of commodity price co-movements generate valuable signals to study the nexus between climate-related conditions and the dynamics of financial systems.
