In their paper "Information Acquisition in Financial Markets" (this journal, 2000), Barlevy and Veronesi present a model of a one-period financial market, and claim that for an open set of parameter values, the value of information increases with the mass of informed agents. That claim is shown here to be false. The property of strategic substitution is robust in their model.
The welfare gain of a shift from capital to a labor income tax is determined in a model of intertemporal optimization with infinite horizon and variable labor supply. The welfare impact of small tax changes is computed by an approximation method around the steady state. When the difference between the growth rate and the discount rate is small, the welfare impact of tax reform depends mainly on the parameters of the production function.
This paper presents a model of rational Bayesian agents with speculative attacks in a regime of exchange rate which is pegged within a band. Speculators learn from the observation of the exchange rate within the band whether their mass is sufficiently large for a successful attack. Multiple periods are necessary for the existence of speculative attacks. Various defense policies are analyzed. A trading policy by the central bank may defend the peg if it is unobserved and diminishes the market's information for the coordination of speculators.

The value of the welfare cost depends essentially on the elasticity of substitution between capital and labor in the production function. Numerical estimates are presented for different values of the parameters of the model. The welfare gain obtained by the abolition of the capital income tax is smaller when the private sector is not endowed with perfect foresight (it is reduced by about 40 percent when expectations are myopic). The allocation efficiency cost of the corporate tax dwarfs the intertemporal welfare cost.

When government liabilities (including money) are held in private portfolios only as stores of value and do not provide additional services (such as liquidity), real variables are not affected by changes in the money supply due to the government's trading in real assets (open market operations). This neutrality of monetary policy fails if the government either trades in nominal assets, or it distributes subsidies and levies taxes.
There are many alleged culprits for the bank runs of 2008 and their devastating economic fallout. But proprietary information and leverage top our list. Claims of proprietary information forced financial markets to operate on trust, while providing the perfect breeding ground for fraud. And leverage permitted creditors to run at the first whiff of fraud, leveling one financial giant after another. Limited Purpose Banking (LPB), presented here, is a financial reform that sharply curtails proprietary information and eliminates leverage and, thus, the possibility of financial collapse. LPB's adoption is supported by our simple model showing how fraud can destroy finance.
The authors characterize the symmetric equilibria of an investment game with a pure informational externality. When the period length is very short, the game ends very quickly; with positive probability, an informational cascade (herding) causes an investment collapse. As the period length increases, the possibility of herding disappears. As the number of players increases, the rate of investment and the information flow are eventually independent of the number of players; adding more players simply increases the number who delay. In the limit, a period of low investment is followed by either an investment surge or a collapse. Copyright 1994 by The Econometric Society.
