Weaker Criteria and Tests for Linear Restrictions in Regression

The standard F test for linear restrictions in regression is relevant as a criterion but fails to capture the notion of tradeoff between bias and variance. Average squared distance criteria yield operational tests that are more appropriate, depending upon objectives. In the present paper two alternative criteria are developed. The first allows testing of the hypothesis that the average squared distance of a restricted estimator from the parameter point in k space is less than the average squared distance of the unrestricted, ordinary least squares estimator from the same parameter point. The second sets up a test of betterness of the restricted estimator over the unrestricted estimator of E(Y/X), where betterness is again defined in average squared distance.

End-of-Sample Instability Tests

This paper considers tests for structural instability of short duration, such as at the end of the sample. The key feature of the testing problem is that the number, m, of observations in the period of potential change is relatively small—possibly as small as one. The well-known F test of Chow (1960) for this problem only applies in a linear regression model with normally distributed iid errors and strictly exogenous regressors, even when the total number of observations, n+m, is large. We generalize the F test to cover regression models with much more general error processes, regressors that are not strictly exogenous, and estimation by instrumental variables as well as least squares. In addition, we extend the F test to nonlinear models estimated by generalized method of moments and maximum likelihood. Asymptotic critical values that are valid as n→∞ with m fixed are provided using a subsampling-like method. The results apply quite generally to processes that are strictly stationary and ergodic under the null hypothesis of no structural instability.

Operational Techniques and Tables for Making Weak MSE Tests for Restrictions in Regressions

Tables of critical points for the noncentral F are presented with noncentrality equal to 1/2 of numerator degrees of freedom for denominator degrees of freedom of 1-30, 40, 60, 120, 200, 400, and 1,000, and numerator degrees of freedom of 1-30, 40, 60, 120, and 200, and type one errors of 0.05, 0.10, 0.25, and 0.50. These critical points can be used to test the second weak MSE criterion discussed in the companion paper [2]. An approximation is suggested for noncentral F(θ), and accuracy checks are given. An appendix provides a Fortran function for the approximation. The approximation is intended for using the first weak MSE test discussed in the companion paper.

Recent Experiments in Social Accounting: Flexible and Dynamic Budgets

In recent years increasing use has been made of systems of social accounts, and a variety of new types and new forms of presentation have been suggested. The general features of such systems are: (a) the division of an economy into a number of groups or economic entities, mostly themselves a complex of elementary units, and (b) a summing up in the form of accounts of the transactions of various kinds between these economic entities. As a rule, the economy of one country is investigated, implying that all other countries are regarded as one single group. The economy considered may be split up into a number of separate groups. It is customary to distinguish between consumers' households, business enterprises, and the government sector. If special attention is to be given to banking problems for example, banks will constitute a separate group.

Existence Results and Finite Horizon Approximates for Infinite Horizon Optimization Problems

The paper deals with infinite horizon optimization problems. The existence of optimal solutions is obtained as a consequence of an asymptotic growth condition. We also exhibit finite horizon approximates that yield upper and lower bounds for the optimal values and whose optimal solutions converge to the long-term optimal trajectories.

Endogenous Production Networks

We develop a tractable model of endogenous production networks. Each one of a number of products can be produced by combining labor and an endogenous subset of the other products as inputs. Different combinations of inputs generate (prespecified) levels of productivity and various distortions may affect costs and prices. We establish the existence and uniqueness of an equilibrium and provide comparative static results on how prices and endogenous technology/input choices (and thus the production network) respond to changes in parameters. These results show that improvements in technology (or reductions in distortions) spread throughout the economy via input–output linkages and reduce all prices, and under reasonable restrictions on the menu of production technologies, also lead to a denser production network. Using a dynamic version of the model, we establish that the endogenous evolution of the production network could be a powerful force towards sustained economic growth. At the root of this result is the fact that the arrival of a few new products expands the set of technological possibilities of all existing industries by a large amount—that is, if there are n products, the arrival of one more new product increases the combinations of inputs that each existing product can use from 2 n −1 to 2 n , thus enabling significantly more pronounced cost reductions from choice of input combinations. These cost reductions then spread to other industries via lower input prices and incentivize them to also adopt additional inputs.

Robust Predictions for Bilateral Contracting with Externalities

The paper studies bilateral contracting between one principal and N agents when each agent's utility depends on the principal's unobservable contracts with other agents. We show that allowing deviations to menu contracts from which the principal chooses bounds equilibrium outcomes in a wide class of bilateral contracting games without imposing ad hoc restrictions on the agents' beliefs. This bound yields, for example, competitive convergence as N →∞ in environments in which an appropriately-defined notion of competitive equilibrium exists. We also examine the additional restrictions arising in two common bilateral contracting games: the “offer game” in which the principal makes simultaneous offers to the agents, and the “bidding game” in which the agents make simultaneous offers to the principal.

Optimal Critical Values for Pre-Testing in Regression

In this paper we derive and present optimal critical points for pre-tests in regression using a minimum average relative risk criterion. We use the same type risk functions as Sawa and Hiromatsu [8] who, in a recent paper in this journal, derived pre-test critical values using a minimax regret criterion. Since James-Stein type estimators can be shown to dominate any pre-test estimator for the risk functions used here and in [8], no normative claims are made for the critical values we give. However, the use of pre-testing procedures continues in practice and the results given here, contrasted with other results, add to information about the character of costs and returns to such practices.
