The Constructive, Destructive, and Reconstructive Power of Social Norms

Despite a long tradition of effectiveness in laboratory tests, normative messages have had mixed success in changing behavior in field contexts, with some studies showing boomerang effects. To test a theoretical account of this inconsistency, we conducted a field experiment in which normative messages were used to promote household energy conservation. As predicted, a descriptive normative message detailing average neighborhood usage produced either desirable energy savings or the undesirable boomerang effect, depending on whether households were already consuming at a low or high rate. Also as predicted, adding an injunctive message (conveying social approval or disapproval) eliminated the boomerang effect. The results offer an explanation for the mixed success of persuasive appeals based on social norms and suggest how such appeals should be properly crafted.

Mind-Set Matters

In a study testing whether the relationship between exercise and health is moderated by one's mind-set, 84 female room attendants working in seven different hotels were measured on physiological health variables affected by exercise. Those in the informed condition were told that the work they do (cleaning hotel rooms) is good exercise and satisfies the Surgeon General's recommendations for an active lifestyle. Examples of how their work was exercise were provided. Subjects in the control group were not given this information. Although actual behavior did not change, 4 weeks after the intervention, the informed group perceived themselves to be getting significantly more exercise than before. As a result, compared with the control group, they showed a decrease in weight, blood pressure, body fat, waist-to-hip ratio, and body mass index. These results support the hypothesis that exercise affects health in part or in whole via the placebo effect.

New Reflections on Visual Search

A 90 degrees rotation of a display can turn a relatively easy visual search into a more difficult one. A series of experiments examined the possible causes of this effect, including differences in overall item shape and response mapping (Experiment 1), the interpretation of scene lighting (Experiment 2), the axis of internal symmetry of the search items (Experiment 3), and the axes of interitem symmetry between target and distractor items (Experiment 4). Only the elimination of differences in interitem mirror symmetry resulted in equal search efficiency in the upright and rotated displays. This finding is strong support for the view that visual search is guided by an analysis that considers interitem relations.

Drug-Induced Amnesia Hurts Recognition, but Only for Memories That Can Be Unitized

Midazolam is a drug that creates temporary anterograde amnesia. In a within-subjects, double-blind experiment, participants studied a list of stimuli after receiving an injection of midazolam in one session and after receiving saline in another session. The lists consisted of three types of stimuli: words, photographs, and abstract pictures. Recognition memory was tested at the end of each session. Memory was reliably poorer in the midazolam condition than the saline condition, but this amnesic effect was significantly smaller for pictorial stimuli than for words and almost nonexistent for abstract pictures. We argue that the less familiar the stimulus, the less likely it is to be associated with an experimental context. These data bolster our claim that unitization increases the chances of episodic binding and that drug-induced amnesia prevents episodic binding regardless of unitization.

Attention and Eye Movements in Reading

A spatial cuing task was used to identify two types of readers, those with a relatively fast and those with a relatively slow buildup of inhibition of return (IOR). Backward-directed eye movements (regressions) during sentence reading were then examined as a function of the two IOR types. The results revealed that readers with fast IOR executed larger regressions than readers with slow IOR, as they directed the eyes away from the most recently attended area of text. Forward-directed eye movements (saccades), by contrast, were not a function of IOR type. Ease of sentence comprehension influenced the size of regressions, but this effect was also independent of IOR type. Multiple mechanisms of spatial attention, including IOR, bias eye movements toward upcoming words in the text during reading.

Persistent Difference in Short-Term Memory Span Between Sign and Speech

Short-term memory (STM) is thought to be limited in capacity to about 7 ± 2 items for linguistic materials and 4 ± 1 items for visuospatial information (Baddeley & Logie, 1999; Cowan, 2001). Recently, we (Boutla, Supalla, Newport, & Bavelier, 2004) challenged this dichotomy between linguistic and visuospatial STM by showing that STM capacity in users of American Sign Language (ASL) is also limited to about 4 or 5 items. This finding suggests that although longer spans appear for speech, spans are not necessarily longer for linguistic materials across all modalities. Wilson and Emmorey (2006) responded that because we evaluated span using digits for English speakers and letters for ASL signers, the difference we reported might have stemmed from stimulus selection rather than language modality. Here we address this claim by reporting an experiment in which we reexamined STM span in English speakers using letters and compared the outcome with results we and Wilson and Emmorey have obtained for ASL signers. It is important to note that the discrepancy between our previous results and those of Wilson and Emmorey is not in the obtained span in signers found by all parties to be around 4 to 5 items (Fig. la). Rather, Wilson and Emmorey disputed whether the digit span of 7 ± 2 in speakers is an appropriate benchmark for comparison with signers. Using letters to measure span in speakers, they found a span of only 5.3, comparable to that of signers. They suggested that there is no difference in span between the two languages. Here we show that their result is not due to their use of letters instead of digits. Rather, in selecting letters that are translations of one another in English and ASL, Wilson and Emmorey failed to control the stimuli in each language for phonological factors known to affect span size. One such crucial factor is phonological similarity. The finding that span is longer for digits than for letters in English speakers is not new (Cavanaugh, 1972). However, this difference has been attributed to the greater phonological similarity of letter names than digit names in English (Conrad & Hull, 1964; Mueller, Seymour, Kieras, & Meyer, 2003). In our previous study, we used letters with signers and digits with speakers to match stimuli in this important regard. Finger-spelled letters are less phonologically similar than number signs in ASL and therefore are more comparable to digits in English speakers. To demonstrate that there is nothing special about letters versus digits, other than the fact that many letter names are highly similar in English (e.g., bee, dee, ee, gee) and thus prone to produce shorter spans, we show here that when phonologically controlled letter materials are used with English speakers, the span of speakers returns to the typical 7 ± 2 range and continues to contrast with the span of signers.

Chunking in Task Sequences Modulates Task Inhibition

In a study of the formation of representations of task sequences and its influence on task inhibition, participants first performed tasks in a predictable sequence (e.g., ABACBC) and then performed the tasks in a random sequence. Half of the participants were explicitly instructed about the predictable sequence, whereas the other participants did not receive these instructions. Task-sequence learning was inferred from shorter reaction times (RTs) in predictable relative to random sequences. Persisting inhibition of competing tasks was indicated by increased RTs in n- 2 task repetitions (e.g., ABA) compared with n- 2 nonrepetitions (e.g., CBA). The results show task-sequence learning for both groups. However, task inhibition was reduced in predictable relative to random sequences among instructed-learning participants who formed an explicit representation of the task sequence, whereas sequence learning and task inhibition were independent in the noninstructed group. We hypothesize that the explicit instructions led to chunking of the task sequence, and that n- 2 repetitions served as chunk points (ABA-CBC), so that within-chunk facilitation modulated the inhibition effect.

Hypnotic Suggestion Modulates Cognitive Conflict

The present work was aimed at investigating whether the flanker compatibility effect can be eliminated by means of a posthypnotic suggestion influencing attentional focusing. In Experiment 1, participants who scored high and low on hypnotic susceptibility performed the flanker compatibility task when naturally awake and when under a posthypnotic suggestion aimed at increasing the target's discriminability from the flankers. Results showed that the posthypnotic suggestion effectively eliminated the flanker compatibility effect in highly susceptible participants, whereas low-susceptibility participants did not show any reduction in the effect. In Experiment 2, highly susceptible participants performed the task after receiving a suggestion but without the induction of hypnosis. Results showed that the suggestion alone was not sufficient to reduce the flanker compatibility effect. These results support the view that in highly susceptible participants, hypnotic suggestion can influence the ability to focus on relevant information.

Prosodic Knowledge Affects the Recognition of Newly Acquired Words

An eye-tracking study examined the involvement of prosodic knowledge--specifically, the knowledge that monosyllabic words tend to have longer durations than the first syllables of polysyllabic words--in the recognition of newly learned words. Participants learned new spoken words (by associating them to novel shapes): bisyllables and onset-embedded monosyllabic competitors (e.g., baptoe and bap). In the learning phase, the duration of the ambiguous sequence (e.g., bap) was held constant. In the test phase, its duration was longer than, shorter than, or equal to its learning-phase duration. Listeners' fixations indicated that short syllables tended to be interpreted as the first syllables of the bisyllables, whereas long syllables generated more monosyllabic-word interpretations. Recognition of newly acquired words is influenced by prior prosodic knowledge and is therefore not determined solely on the basis of stored episodes of those words.
