This study explores relationships between parental resource trajectories and child development and their implications for intergenerational mobility. By modifying the child skill formation technology to incorporate new skills emerging during adolescence, we analyze the importance of the timing of family resources on life outcomes, educational attainment, and participation in crime. Parental financial resources partially offset deficiencies in nonpecuniary inputs to children’s human capital. Estimates of the intergenerational influence on child outcomes are strongly influenced by the choice of lifetime versus snapshot parental income measures. The most predictive ages of children when family resources are measured vary by the outcome analyzed.
This paper estimates a dynamic model of schooling attainment to investigate the sources of racial and ethnic disparity in college attendance. Parental income in the child's adolescent years is a strong predictor of this disparity. This is widely interpreted to mean that credit constraints facing families during the college-going years are important. Using NLSY data, we find that it is the long-run factors associated with parental background and family environment, and not credit constraints facing prospective students in the college-going years, that account for most of the racial-ethnic college-going differential. Policies aimed at improving these long-term family and environmental factors are more likely to be successful in eliminating college attendance differentials than short-term tuition reduction and family income supplement policies aimed at families with college age children.
This paper examines an empirical regularity found in many societies: that family influences on the probability of transiting from one grade level to the next diminish at higher levels of education. We examine the statistical model used to establish the empirical regularity and the intuitive behavioral interpretation often used to rationalize it. We show that the implicit economic model assumes myopia. The intuitive interpretive model is identified only by imposing arbitrary distributional assumptions onto the data. We produce an alternative choice‐theoretic model with fewer parameters that rationalizes the same data and is not based on arbitrary distributional assumptions.
In this paper, we discuss statistical problems that arise in studying sequences of quantal responses (e.g., labor force participation) in panel data on heterogeneous populations (i.e., populations in which there is unobserved variation in response probabilities). Assuming that response probabilities are governed by a beta distribution, we derive a generalization on of the cross-section logit model to enable it to deal with sequences of discrete events in panel data. This model is applied to panel data on labor force participation of married women. One of our findings is that the distribution of participation probabilities is U shaped, indicating that most women have participation probabilities near zero or near one.
Conventional analyses of single spell duration models control for unobservables using a random effect estimator with the distribution of unobservables selected by ad hoc criteria. Both theoretical and empirical examples indicate that estimates of structural parameters obtained from conventional procedures are very sensitive to the choice of mixing distribution. Conventional procedures overparameterize duration models. We develop a consistent nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator for the distribution of unobservables and a computational strategy for implementing it. For a sample of unemployed workers our estimator produces estimates in concordance with standard search theory while conventional estimators do not. ECONOMIC THEORIES of search unemployment (Lippman and McCall [34]; Flinn and Heckman [14]), job turnover (Jovanovic [25]), mortality (Harris [17]), labor supply (Heckman and Willis [23]) and marital instability (Becker [3]) produce structural distributions for durations of occupancy of states. These theories generate qualitative predictions about the effects of changes in parameters on these structural distributions, and occasionally predict their functional forms.2 In order to test economic theories about durations and recover structural parameters, it is necessary to account for population variation in observed and unobserved variables unless it is assumed a priori that individuals are homogeneous.3 In every microeconomic study in which the hypothesis of heterogeneity is subject to test, it is not rejected. Temporally persistent unobserved components are an empirically important fact of life in microeconomic data (Heckman [19]). Since the appearance of papers by Silcock [39] and Blumen, Kogan, and McCarthy [5], social scientists have been aware that failure to adequately control for population heterogeneity can produce severe bias in structural estimates of duration models. Improvements in education and educational quality are widely acknowledged to be major contributors to black economic progress in the twentieth century. This paper investigates the sources of improvement in black education in the South in the first half of the century and demonstrates the important roles of social activism, especially NAACP litigation and private philanthropy, in improving the quality and availability of public schooling. Many scholars view education as a rival to social activism in explaining black economic progress, but such a view misses the important role of philanthropic and legal interventions in promoting education.

The literature on treatment effects focuses on gross benefits from program participation. We extend this literature by developing conditions under which it is possible to identify parameters measuring the cost and net surplus from program participation. Using the generalized Roy model, we nonparametrically identify the cost, benefit, and net surplus of selection into treatment without requiring the analyst to have direct information on the cost. We apply our methodology to estimate the gross benefit and net surplus of attending college.
