A Test of the Social Isolation of Male Tokens

Academy of Management Journal 1983 26(2), 353-361
The article discusses a research on social isolation of male tokens in a nursing school environment. Such study was limited to testing the social isolation of male tokens, indicating that future research must explore two other token dynamics, namely, role entrapment and performance pressure. Furthermore, future research must examine males in other token positions in order to discover what is common to the male token role and what is unique about the nursing school environment. Findings indicated that there was an extremely low percentage of both males and females playing the isolate role. Results also indicated that upperclassmen are more integrated than lowerclassmen.

Majority and Token Minority Group Relationships: Power Acquisition and Communication

Academy of Management Review 1983 8(2), 292-300
Kanter's theory of numerical imbalance states that the successful integration of an organizational member whose social category (e.g.. sex. race) is different from the workgroup majority is an inverse function of the degree of imbalance in the numerical proportion of majority to minority members. This paper challenges this stand, arguing that individual responses to the token minority role and the majority member's role can vary when other sources of status and power are considered.
