ASSOCIATION NOTES.

Abstract This article presents information regarding the activities of several universities and colleges of Accounting. In the Claremont Men's College, George Gibbs has been elected to the Board of Examiners of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) for a term of three years. Gibbs continues his membership on the California State Board of Accountancy. In Northwestern University, Erwin E. Nemmers, formerly of the University of Wisconsin, has been appointed associate professor in the Graduate School of Business Administration. The members of the accounting department met with partners and managers of Arthur Andersen & Co. at a dinner meeting in January 1958, to discuss matters of common interest to educators and practitioners. In the Long Island University-C. W. Post College, Charles H. Zwicker has been appointed lecturer in accounting. The college is now for the first time offering a major in accounting. In the New York University, Bruce Futhey has been appointed to membership on the committees on Education-Personnel and Governmental Accounting of the New York Society of CPAs.

Abstract The article presents appointments and transfers that took place in various universities and colleges of the U.S. Earl E. Pontius has been appointed assistant professor in accounting in the George Washington University, Washington, D.C. The University of Alabama, Alabama was host in April and May 1958 to the twenty sixth Semi-Annual Certified Public Accountants Review Courses offered during a five week period. In Los Angeles State College, California, George N. Francis has been promoted to full professor, Sol. S. Buchalter has been transferred to San Fernando State College in the rank of assistant professor, E. Kennedy Cobb, formerly of Haskins & Sells and Bradley University, will join the staff in the fall term as assistant professor, E.I. Fjeld, formerly of City College of New York (retired), is continuing on the staff for the fall term, 1958 and Willard D. Horwich has joined the staff as assistant professor. George W. Collins has been selected to attend the Joint Committee on Education, representing the American Securities Business, in New York City in June and July 1958. The meetings are to be held in the Graduate School of Business Administration at New York University.

Abstract The article reports on the events in the field of accounting education. George Gibbs was reappointed to a four-year term on the state board of accountancy. E.I. Fjeld, formerly of the College of the City of New York, joined the staff in September as visiting professor of accounting. Willard Horwich was appointed assistant professor of accounting this fall. T. Leroy Mami conducted a three day Institute in Hospital Accounting under the auspices of the Mississippi Hospital Association at Gulf port in July. May Noel Barron returned to the campus after a 15-month leave of absence, during which time she served as assistant auditor for the State of Kentucky. Emerson C. Erb has been granted leave of absence for one year to continue work on his doctorate at Indiana University. William D. Tuxbury was added to the staff in September. H. Calvert Krueger has accepted a position at Arizona State College. Francis D. Jabara received his CPA certificate in Kansas last December. The Second Annual Petroleum Accounting Conference was held on the campus in May with over 250 persons attending.

Abstract The article presents information about the accounting faculty of several universities in the U.S. Walter Meigs of University of Southern California, has served recently as chairman of the accounting section at the meeting of the Pacific Coast Economic Association. From the same university. George T. Altman has given addresses on tax matters to the Pomona Valley Bar Association, the American Society of Women Accountants, the California Society of Certified Public Accountant's, the Life Insurance and Trust Council of Los Angeles, and the National Tax Association. H. T. Scovil of the University of Illinois, was selected for the annual award for "outstanding service to the accounting profession" by the American Institute of Accountants at the annual meeting in Los Angeles, Illinois, on November 1, 1949. This is the first time an educator has been given this award. Scovil has been head of the Department of Business Organization and Operation at the University of Illinois since 1917, was the first educator on the Board of Examiners for the National Certified Public Accountant examination.

Abstract The article presents various developments related to professional accounting and accountants in the U.S. Edward J. Kelley has been appointed to succeed the late Myron M. Strain as Dean of the School of Accountancy. Dean Kelley practiced as a Certified Public Accountant in San Jose prior to 1936, during which time and until 1941, he was Dean of the College of Business Administration of Santa Clara University. He has been serving until this appointment as Controller of Hastings Clothing Company in San Francisco. Howard W. Wright has been granted a leave of absence for the academic year 1950-51. Wright has been appointed Assistant to the Controller of Economic Cooperation Administration. The University of Tulsa, together with seven other sponsoring agencies, was host in April to the fourth annual Conference of Accountants. The two-day program was devoted to the general topic "Humanizing Accounts and Accountants." Noted speakers participated from all parts of the United States and representing many specialties related to accounting.

Abstract This article discusses various developments related to the field of accounting. In Great Britain, the Association of University Teachers of Accounting held its 1950 conference at Manchester University in September. The secretary of the Association is David Solomons of the London School of Economics. In the George Washington University, Ralph Dale Kennedy, currently head of the department of business administration, has been named head of the newly created department of accounting. In Catholic University of America, District of Columbia, Richard J. Bannon has been appointed instructor in accounting. In University of Alabama, Alabama, Richard Brewer is on leave for the current year teaching at the University of Hawaii. Lee Glover from Hawaii is teaching here on an exchange basis. At University of San Francisco, California, A. D. McNeil, director of CPA training, addressed the California Society of CPA's on the impact of accounting on government and business, at their annual meeting in San Francisco in June.

Abstract The article presents information related to the field of accounting. In December, 1947, the Association of University Teachers of Accounting was formed. The Secretary advises that, until this group was formed, there existed in Great Britain no organization which was the counterpart of the American Accounting Association. The list of members is very small, by comparison, about thirty in number, but nevertheless includes virtually all university teachers of accounting in England and Scotland. At a recent meeting in Fort Worth of the Texas Association of University Instructors in Accounting, the following officers were elected President, O.J. Curry, North Texas State College; Vice-President, Charles Zlatkovitch, University of Texas; Secretary-Treasurer, Zeb B. Freeeman, Southern Methodist University. D. M. Beights served on the summer school staff at University of North Carolina, conducting a special course under joint sponsorship of the University and the North Carolina Society of Certified Public Accountants.
