The article presents a response to comments made by John M. Usher in regards to the authors' article “The Evolution of Social Structure: Why Biology Matters.” The authors address three of the points made in Usher's commentary, including the disagreement against the phenomenon-driven nature of socioevolutionary theory, Usher's statement that the undertones of the research presented were deterministic, and his ultimate disregard for socioevolutionary theory because he feels that it is limited to assumed conclusions.
