Academy of Management Review
1976
In this article the author examines the motivation levels of employees and the methods that employers are allowed to use to motivate their workers. He suggests that, on the employee level, the United States is no longer as motivated as they once were. He also points out that, historically, when the American worker was motivated the methods that employers used to motivate were largely authority-oriented. Employers are no longer making use of these methods and the author questions whether this is because management has outgrown these methods or if people have talked them out of it. He examines how the U.S. has gone through this process and urges employers to find new motivational methods before it is too late.
