Tutorials in Consumer Research
We are excited to launch a new initiative at JCR called “Tutorials in Consumer Research.” The goal of this initiative is to provide valuable how-to information for potential authors. We hope to help both junior scholars, including PhD students, and more established scholars who simply lack rigorous training or up-to-date knowledge in particular areas, to learn aspects of the art and craft of doing research that has the potential to be published in top-tier journals (including but not limited to JCR ). We were inspired to do this by the diversity of papers submitted to JCR by authors at all levels of academia and from all around the world. For example, 37% of papers submitted to JCR in 2014–2015 came from authors based outside North America. We are not the first to think of this idea; other interdisciplinary journals, such as the Academy of Management Journal , have published similar types of tutorials. We believe that a tutorial series that addresses conceptual as well as methodological aspects of research can help the field develop and grow.
A Field Guide for the Review Process: Writing and Responding to Peer Reviews
The peer review process––both writing reviews for academic journals and responding to reviews of one’s own work––is fundamental to building scientific knowledge. In this article, we explain why you should invest time reviewing, how to write a constructive review, and how to respond effectively to reviews of your own work.
Choosing Between Two Evils: The Determinants of Preferences for Two Equally Goal-Inconsistent Options
Previous research has examined how people resolve self-control dilemmas in which goal-congruent and goal-incongruent choices are both present. In the present research, however, the participants were asked to choose between two hedonically appealing options that were equally detrimental to a health goal. Six experiments show that activating a health goal decreases the choice share of the more salient, goal-incongruent option, leading the less salient alternative to be chosen instead. This effect occurs without appreciable cognitive deliberation and is evident even when the participants have the option of choosing nothing at all. The potential processes that underlie this effect are discussed.
