Performance Measure Manipulation*

Contemporary Accounting Research 1998 15(3), 261-285
A two‐period model in which communication restrictions preclude the usual revelation representation is analyzed, and the communication policies take on the appearance of “income smoothing.” The driving force is the information content of the “smoothed” or manipulated series, relative to its counterpart were manipulation not possible. Various possibilities arise, depending on the underlying stochastic structure: performance measure manipulation might be socially efficient, or not; and when it is best to invite and motivate this manipulation, the optimal policy itself can take on a variety of forms.

Accounting research: 1985*

Contemporary Accounting Research 1985 2(1), 69-75
This paper offers some impressions of current research in accounting. Three themes are identified: Movement toward imbedding accounting thought in (1) a setting that accommodates substitutes for the accounting product, (2) a dynamic view of the environment in which the accounting product is used, and (3) a model of human cognition that generates explicit demand for decision support activities. It is also suggested that closer correlation between theoretical and empirical research would be productive.

Revenue recognition*

Contemporary Accounting Research 1989 5(2), 423-451
This paper examines the information content of revenue recognition rules in a series of environments, ranging from an abstract disclosure setting to one of disclosure in the presence of moral hazard and self‐reporting by an informed agent. The emphasis is on conceptualization of recognition issues, ranging across financial and labor markets, and the simplification required to force the analysis into a workable and familiar model. In this way, the limitations of both our thinking about recognition issues and our modeling techniques are highlighted.

Sequential Bayesian Analysis in accounting settings*

Contemporary Accounting Research 1985 1(2), 176-192
The familiar decision analysis setting in accounting, such as a cost‐volume‐profit analysis setting, is modeled as arising in a “larger” context in which subsequent choice is also contemplated. We then ask when this “larger” context decomposes in a manner such that the immediate problem of interest can be modeled as an expected utility maximization problem that is completely divorced from the subsequent choice problem. Outcome and taste independence conditions are the key ingredients in being able to model the immediate problem as having no link whatever to its successor.
