Adapting the BSC for SMEs - Observations from an Action Research Study

Management Science 2013
This paper critically examines the use of the balanced scorecard (BSC) for small and medium enterprises (SME). Despite its popularity and utility for strategy management, the literature reporting on the uses and limitations of the BSC in SMEs is rare. The literature survey also highlighted some of the gaps and issues related to strategy and SMEs. The researchers used their experience in helping organizations of various sizes implement the BSC to formulate a simpler and more practical strategy implementation model for SMEs that adapts some key ideas of the BSC together with other strategy management ideas like building lasting organizations and strategic capabilities. The model was developed through an action research project with a Malaysian SME in the IT industry. It was also tested with another start-up non-profit organization. This paper describes some of the observations and lessons learned.

The Role of Branding in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

Management Science 2013
The purpose of this article is to show the relationship between branding and brand management in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Traditionally, branding was associated with large and global corporations. However, we often forget that small and medium-sized enterprises also deal with their own names (brands) in their own way. The study identified four types of businesses, regardless of their association with brands. We named these four types, as follows: Ignorant; User; Low-Cost Producer; and Differentiation Producer. If the first two types (i.e. Ignorant and User) differ primarily in the extent to which they use simple branding activities, and are used mainly in the local market where the enterprises tend to operate, we found that the last two types (i.e. low-cost producers and differentiation producers) design their branding strategies in accordance with their generic strategies and mode of growth.

Cost Structures in Organizations: A Strategic Paradox

Management Science 2013
Cost-cutting has been a common means in efforts to improve a firm’s ‘bottom-line’ during times of declining revenues, despite the evidence that cost-cutting has generally produced mixed results on profitability. In this paper, cost structures in firms are conceptualized as being a strategic paradox created by concurrent opposing forces which necessitate the firm to give consideration to simultaneously increasing and decreasing the cost structure. These pressures are explored via a classification of cost-programs to address alternative cost-pressures faced by firms.

Financial Decentralization in Bulgaria: An Outlook

Management Science 2013
This study is intended to provide a critical overview of the local government finance reform and analyze the process of strengthening financial decentralization in Bulgaria. First of all, the specifics of government structure and the main components of the legal base in the scope of local self-government are presented. The quantitative analysis is focused on dynamics of the public expenditure indicators and the structure of local revenues, based on fact figures for the period 1990–2011 and forecast for 2012. The influence of economic crises on local government finance is discussed and estimated. A comparison is drawn between the three most severe downturns of Bulgarian economy during the last 20 years, namely the price liberalization in the beginning of transition (1991–1993), the credit crunch and series of bank bankruptcies, which caused the financial crisis in 1996–1997, and the current worldwide crisis. Some of the most important actions, taken by the government in order to consolidate the crisis are described and evaluated on the base of their effects on the local finance. The conclusion is that although the current crisis reached Bulgaria at comparatively mature stage of financial decentralization reform, municipalities can do very little without active central government support and cannot substitute for it in regard of the basic anti-crisis measures.

The Use of Age Management to Professional Activiation of the Elderly

Management Science 2013
In Europe for many years debates have taken place on the need to increase the rate of economic activity of the population, particularly the elderly. Representatives of businesses, educational institutions, trade unions, employers and local entities dealing with employment and demographics have exchanged views and experiences on activities to meet the demographic challenges .Europe’s population is aging fast as the human life span has increased and the level of fertility of European women has remained low. As a result of the changing structure of the population, the share of the elderly is increased. Defi nitely less attention is paid to the fact that it is a great achievement of civilization of each country. However, it cannot be denied that the dynamics of the aging process of the population in conjunction with the relatively low professional activity of older people raises many concerns.
